Barcelona is the most cosmopolitan and economically active Spanish city. It has always followed the latest international tendencies. This is evident in its architecture, which reflects its general approach to life in this pulsating city. There are monuments of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance periods, but most characteristic is what has been built during the last 100 years. Barcelona is a centre of Modernist architecture and is distinguished by the works of Antoní Gaudí.
